ELIOT, Maine — Not many people can rebuild an automobile clutch in less than 45 minutes.
But Steve Cultrera of Eliot, Maine, can, and his knowledge of the clutch and effort helped lead the racing team he works for to a world championship.
Cultrera — who turned 54 on Sunday — was part of a team owned by Cagnazzi Racing that recently won the 2007 POWERade Drag Racing Series World Championship. The car Cultrera works on participated in the 23-race series, which uses a scoring format similar to NASCAR’s NEXTEL CUP. The series began and ended in Los Angeles with races in February and Nov. 9. In between, Cultrera traveled all over the United States to such places as Phoenix, Bristol, Tenn., Philadelphia, Dallas and Memphis.
